Slow The Water Seepage While Planning Water Damage Repairs

If you've noticed moisture seeping into your basement causing damage, it's time to take action. If you act at the first sign of water seepage, you can limit the amount of water damage restoration work you will need to have done. While you're preparing for professional help repairing the damage, you can take steps to reduce the amount of moisture your home will be exposed to now.

Gutter Issues

So many homeowners make the mistake of neglecting the gutters on their homes. When you allow the gutters to fill with debris, they are no longer able to carry the water away from the home. That results in water flowing directly against the side of your home and surrounding the foundation. Then, it slowly seeps through the foundation into your basement.

Take the weekend and clean your gutters. At the very least, monitor the water flow through the system during the next rain event. If you notice an area where the water is flowing over the edge of the gutter, take note—this area will need attention to prevent further damage.

Clogged Downspouts

Downspouts are another element of the gutter system that is often overlooked. As the water flows through the gutters, it makes its way to the downspouts. Those downspouts are supposed to be carrying the water down and away from the home.

If the downspouts become clogged with debris, the water can back up and prevent drainage.

Another issue with downspouts is that they aren't carrying the water far enough to protect the home. Downspout extensions can be purchased and installed with little effort.

No Slope

The ground around your foundation should have a slight slope away from the home to control water flow. If water is ponding at the foundation, adding some soil to create a slope away from the home will help.

To test if the ground is sloped enough, get a larger ball, like a soccer ball, and place it at the foundation. Give it a little tap and watch to see if it rolls away from the home. If not, the slope needs to be increased.

Water damage will get worse with time. Take these steps to prevent further moisture from entering your basement while you prepare for the water damage repairs to be made. Talk with your local water damage restoration professionals to learn more about what you can do to decrease the damage that your home is sustaining. Chances are they'll get you the help you need much faster than you might think.
